Whether you run a large corporation, a small business, or a sole proprietorship; operating a blog is a great way to drive traffic to the website and convert readers into paying customers. A question that comes up a lot is how often should I post on my blog? This is an important question to answer but also very difficult because it all depends on the type of blog being published.
Should I Post Daily?
The newest bloggers likely think that they need to post a new blog every day of the week. While this can be a good thing, it can also be detrimental to your readers. Blogging daily can force you to throw content together for the sake of posting a blog. When you are first starting out it is a good idea to post daily in an effort to build your readership. Once you grab some readers you can dial down the number of times you post each week.
There are blogs out there today that do post content on a daily schedule but it’s due to the industry in which they operate. For example, a gossip blog likely requires new content daily. Or, if you run a blog that covers breaking news in your city or state, that would require daily posts to keep up with all of the goings on of the area.
Post Two or Three Times Per Week
The best bet when it comes to scheduling content for your blog is to have something new to post two or three times per week. Close to 90 percent of the blogs active today can get away with posting two or three times per week. Again, don’t post a blog to simply post a blog. You need to offer readers something substantial each time you decide to post. If you don’t, they will stop coming back to the blog.
Posting only a couple of times per week will not alienate your readers, who could become overwhelmed with alerts from your blog when you post daily. The less often you post, the better your posts will be due to the fact that you will have important information to share with your readers.
Determining Blog Routine
Once you decide how often you should post a blog you need to come up with a routine. You can’t force yourself to follow a blogging routine of someone else because it works for them. You need to build a routine that works for you and your company. There is no blogging program out there that satisfied every company or every individual.
Should you decide it’s time to reduce the number of blog posts you will publish, be sure to follow these tips:
- Don’t make any abrupt changes. Reduce the number of posts from seven to five or five to three.
- Work down towards your target weekly post number. If you want to get down to just one post per week you can do it over a period of a couple weeks.
- Why not ask your readers? Find out if they like your current blog routine. Would they prefer fewer posts to read each week?
- Make publishing content easier on yourself by creating a content calendar. You can even write posts in advance of their publication date and schedule them accordingly.
